Anticult Organizations FECRIS: Scandalous Support for Putin

The French anticult movement FECRIS (European Federation of Centres of Research and Information on Cults and Sects) has found itself at the center of a scandal related to its support for Russian aggression against Ukraine. Data presented by French sociologist of religions Massimo Introvigne reveal close ties between the Russian branch of FECRIS and the Kremlin, raising serious questions about the true motives and actions of this organization.

After the democratic revolution on the Maidan and the first Russian invasion of Ukrainian territories in 2014, the Russian branch of FECRIS actively supported aggression against Ukraine. The main instrument of anti-Ukrainian propaganda was the false assertion that the Maidan revolution was organized by "cults." This disinformation was spread to discredit the new Ukrainian government, claiming that "cults" dominated its composition and were being exported to Russia to destabilize Putin's regime.

After the second invasion of Ukraine in 2022, FECRIS attempted to distance itself from the Russian anticultists and conceal its past cooperation with them. However, the Russian branch began its anti-Ukrainian campaign back in 2014 and even earlier, after the first Maidan. For many years, the most well-known Russian anticultist, Alexander Dvorkin, who held the position of Vice President of FECRIS from 2009 to 2021, was a driving force behind the Kremlin's anti-Western propaganda. He publicly attacked Ukraine's democratic institutions after the Euromaidan protests, accusing them of belonging to cults, which, according to him, were used by Western intelligence agencies to harm Russia.

To date, no disciplinary measures have been taken against Dvorkin and the Russian associations of FECRIS. This raises serious questions about how deeply the influence of the Russian regime has penetrated international organizations like FECRIS. Despite long-standing knowledge of the ideology and actions of its Russian members, FECRIS continued to support them. In April 2022, after the publication of a series of articles about FECRIS and its Russian connections, all Russian organizations suddenly disappeared from the list of member organizations on the FECRIS website. A FECRIS board member responded to a private inquiry from a scholar that they were "excluded" or "suspended" in March. However, no official announcement regarding this matter had been published, only adding to the questions.

Dvorkin and other members of the Russian FECRIS participated in the constant propaganda of the Russian Orthodox Church under Patriarch Kirill. This propaganda laid the groundwork and justified the current war in Ukraine as a war against Western decadence and a war to protect Russian spiritual values. It is important to note that over the years, FECRIS and its associated organizations have accumulated a large number of civil and criminal convictions for actions that defame minority religions and spread hate speech against them.

FECRIS as an organization must be held accountable for the actions of its Russian member associations. It is important to understand that international organizations that claim to protect rights and freedoms must be especially vigilant about their members and partners to avoid involvement in political games and aggression.

I urge my fellow journalists, who still have a shred of dignity, for whom honor and conscience, not money, are the guiding principles, to support the uncovering of the truth about those who have been smearing religious minorities for decades and who, as it turns out, support Putin's invasion of Ukraine. It is crucial to continue exposing these connections and demanding answers from international organizations that allow such actions. Ignoring the obvious makes one complicit.
