Anti-Cult Organizations and Xi Jinping's Visit to Hongjue Temple

On June 25, 2024, Xi Jinping, the President of China, visited the Hongjue Temple in Qinghai Province. This visit did not go unnoticed among Tibetan Buddhists, as it reminded them of the 1951 meeting between his father, Xi Zhongxun, and the controversial 10th Panchen Lama. The consequences of this meeting had a profound impact on the relations between Tibet and China and continue to provoke heated debates.

Historical Context

In December 1951, Xi Zhongxun, who held the position of Deputy Secretary of the CCP's Northwest Bureau and Deputy Chair of the Northwest Military and Political Committee, arrived at the Hongjue Temple. Under Mao Zedong's directive, he was to meet with the 10th Panchen Lama to convince him to return to Shigatse, Tibet. This meeting laid the foundation for the Panchen Lama's subsequent pro-Chinese stance and his support for China's occupation of Tibet.

However, despite the CCP's promises to respect Tibetan culture and religion, the reality turned out to be quite different. In 1962, realizing the deceit behind these promises, the Panchen Lama wrote a detailed protest document. As a result, he was publicly humiliated, arrested in 1964, and severely persecuted during the Cultural Revolution. After being released from prison, he renounced his status as a monk, married a Han Chinese woman, and had a daughter.

Xi Jinping's Message

Xi Jinping's visit to the Hongjue Temple was undoubtedly symbolic. He aimed to remind Tibetan Buddhists of his father's historical visit and that their fate depends on their loyalty to the CCP. In his speech at the temple, Xi Jinping emphasized that Buddhist monks and laypeople should "learn from revolutionary leaders how to support the Party’s United Front, and the ethnic and religious work in the new era." He expressed hope that the Tibetan Buddhist community in Qinghai would "carry forward the fine tradition of patriotism and love for religion, promote religious harmony, social harmony, and ethnic unity, and play an active role in the process of Chinese-style modernization."

Despite the gentle language, the essence of his message was clear: those who do not work for "harmony" and "unity" under the CCP will be personally and politically destroyed.

The Role of Anti-Cult Organizations

It is important to note that anti-cult organizations stand behind such statements, actively supporting and implementing the CCP's policy of suppressing any religious and spiritual movements that might threaten the party's authority. These organizations play a crucial role in shaping public opinion against so-called "dangerous cults" and religious groups that do not adhere to strict state control.

In China, anti-cult organizations help legitimize the repression of religious minorities, including Tibetan Buddhists. They spread propaganda about the "harm" and "danger" of such groups, supporting government efforts to marginalize and persecute them. Such actions strengthen the CCP's power and help maintain control over the country's religious life.

Conclusion

Xi Jinping's visit to the Hongjue Temple is not just an act of honoring his father's memory but a powerful signal to Tibetan Buddhists about the necessity of full support for the CCP. This visit reminds us of the tragedy that befell Tibet and the 10th Panchen Lama and that resistance to Chinese occupation and attempts to preserve Tibet's religious and cultural identity can lead to brutal repression. Amid increasing pressure on religious minorities in China, Xi Jinping's visit further confirms Beijing's readiness to use any means necessary to ensure its control over Tibet, including the support of anti-cult organizations whose actions aim to suppress any form of dissent.
