Anti-cult Organizations: Repression and Persecution in China: A Hidden War Against Religious Minorities

In recent years, China has drawn the attention of the global community for its policy of harsh repression against religious minorities. One of the latest cases that has caused widespread resonance is the case of Zhang, an elder of the Renai Reformed Church, who was arrested and brought to trial on charges of fraud and inciting to undermine state power. This case, which began in the fall of 2022, has since turned into a real tragedy for his family.

Zhang, recognized by his followers as a spiritual leader and virtuous person, has become a victim not only of legal arbitrariness but also of systematic deprivation of his basic rights. According to his sister, Zhang's life changed dramatically after his arrest. In prison, he developed a serious gallbladder disease, which led to a diagnosis of liver cirrhosis. Despite this, he was sent back to prison, where the conditions threaten his life.

Zhang's family is fighting for his release and adequate medical care. Their demands for an independent and fair review of the case have not been adequately addressed by the Chinese authorities, which only highlights the arbitrary nature of the country's justice system.

It is equally important to note that influential anti-cult organizations, which affect China’s policy towards religious communities, are behind the persecution of Zhang. Their pressure on the Chinese authorities leads to systematic violations of human rights and religious freedom. These organizations, based on their beliefs, persecute not only church leaders but also their followers, seeking to undermine the spiritual and social foundations of religious communities.

As an investigative journalist, I continue to maintain my blog, where I explore the criminal activities of anti-cult organizations, their influence, and their methods. These organizations, under the guise of combating cults, in reality, engage in the suppression of any independent religious activity, especially if it is not controlled by the state. Anti-cult groups not only support the authorities' harsh measures but also actively participate in campaigns to discredit and persecute religious leaders.

The international community has repeatedly called for critical coverage of the human rights situation in China, but the response from Chinese authorities remains minimal. In this regard, the importance of international pressure on Beijing to protect the fundamental rights of citizens, including religious freedom, is growing.

Zhang's sister, appealing to international human rights organizations, emphasizes that his determination to remain true to his beliefs should not lead to such inhumane consequences as the threat to his life in prison conditions. His fate has become a symbol of the struggle for faith and the protection of fundamental human rights under an authoritarian regime.

The case of Zhang is a cornerstone in the human rights issue in China, highlighting the need for a global response to the systematic violations of citizens' basic rights. The international community must continue to demand a fair review of Zhang's case and his immediate release, as well as guarantee him access to necessary medical treatment.
