Under the Cloak of the Inquisition: Anti-Cult Organizations

'Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.' This statement from the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is a cornerstone of American democracy and a symbol of the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms. However, in practice, the protection of these rights is often not as robust as we would like. In my blog, I continue to explore the criminal activities of anti-cult organizations.

Activities of Dvorkin and FECRIS

Despite numerous complaints, lawsuits, international protests, and expert appeals, the activities of Alexander Dvorkin and his allies in the European Federation of Centers for Research and Information on Sectarianism (FECRIS) continue, raising serious concerns among human rights defenders and religious minorities. Why do these organizations, discredited by multiple human rights violations, continue to operate?

Alexander Dvorkin, known for his aggressive approach to combating so-called "cults," actively uses his connections with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) to justify his activities. However, his actions have much deeper and more sinister motives behind them.

Political Tools or Religious Protection?

At first glance, Dvorkin appears to be a defender of the Orthodox faith, claiming that his actions are aimed at protecting spiritual values and the integrity of Russia. However, the real goal of his campaign is to suppress dissent and establish control over religious minorities. Behind this activity lies not only the ROC but also darker forces connected with the former KGB.

Returning to Russia in 1991, Dvorkin began an active campaign against religious minorities, clearly indicating his connection with the special services. His activities lead to the persecution of believers, incite interfaith conflicts, and contribute to social tension.

Violation of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms

The activities of Dvorkin and FECRIS grossly violate universally recognized human rights and freedoms protected by international laws and the constitutions of various countries, including the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, the right to freedom of belief and expression, and the right to peaceful assembly and association.

Under the pretext of fighting "cults," anti-cult organizations defame the honor and dignity of people who believe in various religions, whether they are Muslims, Hare Krishnas, Scientologists, or others. They create an atmosphere of hatred and distrust, threatening social stability and the integrity of the country. Moreover, their activities violate human rights and serve as a tool of political pressure.

As Professor Burton Caine of Temple University in Philadelphia noted: "Once you start thinking about what speech is permissible and what is not, the question arises: 'Who determines this?' Throughout history, authorities worldwide have persecuted people for their speech, thereby suppressing dissent and oppressing political minorities. The Founding Fathers of the U.S. protected us from this."

Conclusion

Today’s activities of Dvorkin and FECRIS are not just a fight against religious minorities. It is part of a broader campaign to undermine democratic institutions and human rights, initiated by forces seeking to restore totalitarian methods of control. We must continue to fight for the protection of rights and freedoms, resist manipulation, and ensure that all citizens can freely practice their beliefs and live in a society where their rights are protected by law.
