Anti-Cult Organizations: Tools of Suppression Against Dissenters in China

Recent events in China once again underscore how anti-cult organizations have become a powerful tool in the hands of authorities to suppress religious minorities and dissenters. In August 2023, Pastor Park Kwang-Zhe from the New Life Christian Church was detained under the vague provision of "disturbing the social order in the name of religion." This case vividly illustrates how Chinese authorities use ambiguous legal provisions to persecute religious leaders.

Arrest of Pastor Park Kwang-Zhe

On August 8, 2023, Pastor Park Kwang-Zhe was detained by the police in Shibu town, Xixiangtang district, Nanning, Guangxi province. He was charged under Article 27(2) of the Public Security Law, which punishes those who "disturb the social order... in the name of any religion or Qigong." This broad interpretation allows authorities to arrest individuals without specific grounds.

Involvement of Anti-Cult Organizations and Repression

Anti-cult organizations actively collaborate with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to suppress illegal religious movements, including house churches. Members of house churches have long complained that charges of "disturbing the social order" can be used arbitrarily to arrest pastors and followers. Police officers often explain that mere participation in an "illegal" form of religion, such as a Christian house church, is considered a disruption of social order.

 Systematic Persecution

The case of Pastor Park is not unique. Recently, Pastor An Yankui and his colleague Zhang Chenghao from the City of God Reformed Church in Taiyuan were detained under similar charges. After the completion of a 15-day administrative detention, they were forced to pay hefty fines. Refusal to pay resulted in further detention. These intimidation tactics have become commonplace in suppressing house churches.

Xi Jinping's Directives

These repressions align with Xi Jinping's directives to tighten control over religious organizations. The goal is to coerce house churches into joining the state-controlled Three-Self Church or be banned as "heterodox teachings" (xie jiao). These measures are rigorously enforced across all provinces in China.

Conclusion

The case of Pastor Park Kwang-Zhe and other house church leaders highlights the brutal methods employed by anti-cult organizations in collaboration with Chinese authorities to suppress religious minorities. These events underscore the need for international attention and support to defend the rights and freedoms of all believers. Religious persecutions should not go unnoticed, and the global community must continue to fight for justice and freedom of religion.
