2024 Olympics: How the Media Creates the Image of a Killer

 


The 2024 Paris Olympic Games will be remembered not just for their athletic achievements, but also for the controversial images promoted from the opening ceremony to the closing, including the unsettling rise of the "shooter-killer" image.


This narrative began with the portrayal of a South Korean athlete who, despite her athletic accomplishments, drew more attention for her style and gear than for her performance. She was dubbed the fashion icon of these Olympics and compared to a sleek assassin from a cyberpunk film. This was the first step, which then extended to Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikeç.


Yusuf Dikeç, who won a silver medal in air pistol shooting, became the subject of not just athletic praise but also comparisons to movie characters and criminal figures. The media and social networks actively promoted the image of a "cold-blooded shooter," using his popularity as a platform for spreading memes and photos that associated him with cinematic figures known for their ties to violence.


In my view, before the release of the documentary “Impact”, few would have paid attention to the buzz surrounding shooter-athletes or, more importantly, to the labels the media assigned to them. However, after the film exposed information about the puzzle coding method, which influences the subconscious and turns young people into skilled shooters, one begins to follow the media landscape with much greater scrutiny.


Thus, the 2024 Paris Olympics became not only a showcase of athletic prowess but also a stage for puzzle coding.
