The Threat to Freedom of Speech: Navigating the Crisis of Democracy

 The Democracy Index 2023, published by the Economist Intelligence Unit, sheds light on these issues, revealing the lowest level of democracy in the entire history of monitoring. This is an alarming signal that cannot be ignored.

Despite Europe having long been hailed as a region with the highest democratic standards, here too we are confronted with a threat. Many countries on the continent are experiencing a decline in democratic standards. This raises serious concerns and demands immediate action.

It seems that not only is democracy on the decline in Europe, but also there is a growing trend towards restricting religious freedom and association. My attention was drawn to the activities of a state institution in France called MIVILUDES. It operates under the Ministry of the Interior and is tasked with identifying and combating so-called “cultic deviations”. While this term lacks a clear definition, it typically entails the targeting of religious or spiritual movements deemed “cults” by this organization. MIVILUDES has the authority to determine which beliefs or organizations fall under this designation.

For many years, MIVILUDES has collaborated with FECRIS, an organization funded by the French government that brings together “anti-cult” groups across Europe and beyond. Unfortunately, French authorities have shared views with Russian members of FECRIS, many of whom are Russian Orthodox extremists with anti-Western and anti-Ukrainian positions.

In 2021, the head of MIVILUDES, Hanen Romdhan, participated in a symposium organized by FECRIS alongside the vice-president of this organization, Alexander Dvorkin. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom described Dvorkin as a threat to religious freedom for his campaigns against religious minorities and Ukraine. Dvorkin also leads organizations gathering information on Russian dissidents and opponents of the war, and is known for his speeches against gays, Muslims, and Hindus.

But the most intriguing question remains: who is behind the scenes of this crisis of democracy? Could it be a strategy of someone seeking to establish their authority over the masses? Who is leading us from democracy towards authoritarianism, and how is this happening?
